INFORMATION ON DOE MOTORHOME TESTING

All motorhomes 4 years and older, will undergo a DOE Test by an approved
DOE Test Centre

Motorhome DoE Testing has now become compulsory for ALL motorhomes at their 4th birthday and every year thereafter. According to the RSA, DoE Testing for motorhomes will only be required every two years and this is expected to be announced in draft legislation this summer. However, to date we are not aware of an official statement to this effect.

Irrespectively, all 2006 registered motorhomes and older now require a DoE Test and a
Certificate of Road Worthiness. (CRW)

If you haven’t done it before here’s the recommended procedure:

Empty your van down to its basics, removing all personal belongings, gas tanks, etc.

Go to a local weigh station that issues a printed weight docket. (There are official weighbridges in
most localities but many quarries, animal feed merchants and others also operate weighbridges who issue printed dockets as standard. These MUST include the vehicle registration number.)

Now having checked your tyre pressures are correct, take your clean, weighed van to your chosen DoE  Testing station where you have made an appointment, and remember to take your Vehicle Registration Certificate with you.

We use the weighbridge at Dan O’Connor Feeds Ltd just off the Limerick – Tipperary Road at
Ballysimon, Limerick. (Phone: 061 414988) and the DoE Test Centre operated by TruckCar Sales Ltd., just outside Croom, at Fanningstown, Co. Limerick. (Phone: 061 600720 - The manager here is a caravan owner himself and is generally very helpful to motorhome owners.) Your test is meant to be valid for two years but as the RSA have apparently failed to agree and then issue details of the entire
regulations this information hasn't yet reached the licensing authorities. The RSA hope to arrange  extensions for a second year to those getting a DoE at present.

Currently the Certificate provided by the DoE Test Centre must be sent to your local licencing authority,  who will then issue a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW).

We have been in contact with the RSA who are conducting a review of a testing regime as it pertains to motorcaravans. A consultation process is in progress and this is our understanding of the current situation.  Prior to the closing of the consultation process 12th of May 2010, Draft legislation will then be proposed to remove any ambiguity's regarding the current test regime.
Therefore if you have any queries in relation to this please contact the Road
